Christmas Celebration at Imperial Country Club

Members of Delta Pi Delta Alumnae Chapter met for a Christmas celebration at Imperial Country Club in Naples, Florida, on December 8, 2012. The group was large and festive, and hostess Donna Porter provided a beautiful luncheon and included our perennial favorite at Imperial, sticky buns, on the menu. As Christmas gifts, members brought gift cards to grocery, drug and department stores for women in shelters in Lee and Collier Counties.

After lunch The Voices of Naples, performed holiday music. The Voices of Naples is a community chorus currently comprised of 70 members ranging in age from mid 20’s to mid 70’s. The group is open to any person who loves to sing. Their mission is to provide quality choral music to the community and to provide scholarship opportunities for student vocalists. A representative number of the chorus sang at our luncheon under the direction of the very amiable and talented Artistic Director, Dr. Douglas Renfroe. The choral group looked terrific, and they sang even better. They included uplifting Christmas music and even a little Hanukkah music in their repertoire of songs. This was an occasion filled with Christmas spirit.

There was one more special event in honor of one of our younger members, who is about to get married. Tiffany and her fiance Jim were serenaded with the Alpha Chi Sweetheart Song in anticipation of their forthcoming nuptials. Members Scottie and Darlene led our group in this song, which we wish we had more occasions to sing.

November Luncheon at Grandezza

Delta Pi Delta members gathered for a luncheon and presentation at Grandezza Country Club in Estero, Florida, on November 10, 2012. Our speaker was Kristin Vaughn, who works in the Naples branch of Leslie Hindman Auctioneers. This branch is a “mid-market,” appraisal and auction service because it deals with items in a price range from $500 to $500,000. The items that the service deals with are usually on consignment and commonly the result of the “4 Ds,” Death, Divorce, Debt and Downsizing. Kristin demystified the process of determining the value of an item and informed us of the way globalization of bidding, by internet and phone, has caused prices to skyrocket. She urged members not to hesitate to consult a service like hers to find out the value of their possessions, as the items may be much more valuable than the owners are aware of.

Rosemary Zakoian gave the thought for the day, but we remember best her closing words about the coming holidays:

"Here’s to turkey, Here’s to pie, Here’s to scales that make us cry."

On a more serious note, the meeting ended with a remembrance of Sue Nipp, a long time member of Delta Pi Delta, who was taken from us before her time as the result of a tragic accident in her home. Sue passed away on June 24, 2012.
