Delta Pi Delta Alumnae Chapter celebrates Hera Day, 2015

On March 14, 2015, members of Delta Pi Delta Alumnae Chapter of Alpha Chi Omega gathered for Hera Day, a special day for Alpha Chis because it celebrates the altruistic tradition that has guided its members ever since the founding of the sorority in 1885. Shirley Blake was our hostess at Worthington Country Club in Bonita Springs, Florida.

The installation of two officers took place: Donna Porter, Treasurer, and Phyllis Leahy, Recording Secretary, who are both continuing in the offices they presently hold for 2016-2018. Jean Knight, Vice-President in charge of Membership, is also continuing in her present office, but will be installed at a future meeting. Members of our alumnae chapter who have contributed to the welfare of others are honored with a red carnation in recognition of their contributions. This year, Delta Pi Delta members have amassed over 13,000 volunteer hours. Three members received their fifty-year pins: they were Ronda Hill, Phyllis Leahy and Sally Meeuwsen.

Donna had an exciting announcement. On March 30, Alpha Chis in SW Florida are invited to a presentation by representatives from Alpha Chi Headquarters about an extension presentation at Florida Gulf Coast University. The presentation will be at the Veranda Restaurant from 6:00-8:00 PM in downtown Fort Myers. AX alumnae are also invited to the extension presentation on the following afternoon, Tuesday, March 31, on the FGCU campus at 5:30 pm. RSVP to Krystin Tomlinson at KTomlinson@alphachiomega.org.

Our presenter for the day was Jennifer Benton, Executive Director of Abuse Counseling & Treatment, Inc., which serves Lee, Hendry and Glades Counties. While the center provides a safe haven for abused individuals, its long term goal is to empower victims of abuse by providing them with comprehensive services to assure their success when they leave the shelter. There is no charge to clients to stay at ACT nor is there a time limit on how long they can stay. Presently, the agency faces an ever-increasing demand for its services.

The meeting on this day closed with the recitation by members of the “Rededication Bond,” and the “Symphony of Alpha Chi Omega,” as a reminder of the spirit of Alpha Chi Omega and in celebration of forty-one years of sisterhood in Southwest Florida.
